Within South Korea's capital lays one of Korea's more popular national parks. Bukhan-san National Park struts out of the sky-scraper landscape of downtown Seoul like a guardian God. It's mountain-scape is a typical example of Korean mountain. It has large pointed craggy peaks of white rock that jut out of its verdant forests. Like all Korean mountains Bukhan-san has a legend in that once the mountain spirit of Baekdu-san (2744m) in North Korea visited Bukhan-san and was so impressed by its landscape that he still returns to the area for more views. These days the views from Bukhan-san involve long vistas out over the city of Seoul, offering the hiker a contrasting moment with nature and city. Bukhan-san is rich in Korean culture where the remains of ancient walls built in 1392 of previous kingdoms still exist. The mountainous terrain is naturally filled with innumerable Buddhist temples, Confucian shrines, and Shamanic shrines. It was and still is the guardian mountain of Korea's 600 year old capital.

I told you on Thursday that it was the highlight of our trip to Korea, and we'd only been in Korea for 2 days.  After another 4 days, it REMAINED the highlight of our trip.  The boys have talked incessantly about it with their Japanese friends, and we all feel taller and stronger for surmounting such a steep peak.  There's something life-altering about surmounting one's fears as well.  Thank you especially for being such a strong leader for Ian & Max - they both speak fondly of "Captain Roger".    You were incredibly patient with their periodic hesitancy, and it was wonderful to watch them grow along the journey.  You and Ben provided magnificent role models for them, and your names have been referenced frequently as synonyms with bravery and prowess.

Roger is the perfect guide in that he knows it's all about what the client prefers rather than how well he should stick to his plans. He is also someone who shows genuine concern for the well-being of his clients. As this tour is more challenging, one needs a guide like Roger who is more flexible in terms of how far/how quickly you can/want to climb or how early you want to start taking on Mt Bukhan. Roger is also an enjoyable trekking guide with a good sense of humor and many interesting stories to tell.

Roger is everything a tour guide should be- interesting, informative, and attentive. As an added bonus, he is also an excellent photographer, and took many pictures of me with my camera in front of gorgeous backdrops; we were fortunate to have crystal clear weather and blue skies! The temples and scenery were incredible. This opportunity to go off the beaten path and experience Korea with a terrific guide is definitely not one to be missed
